The Viennese Period

Bach died in 1750 and Handel in 1759.  Haydn and Mozart, the next pair of great composers, were born in 1732 and 1756 respectively, and the chief musical centre switches to Vienna, where they both lived and worked.  Beethoven and Schubert were to follow on in the same town, and this great period of musical activity is often called "The Viennese Period".  During its course, sonata form and the other kindred forms were evolved, the string quartet was born, the modern orchestra was founded, and the symphony and Concerto, as we know them today, were established.
