Song
Schubert's
songs have been referred to in the last chapter. They mark the beginning of the romantic period, as far as
song writing is concerned. Schumann
and Mendelssohn followed on, each writing a large number of art
songs. Mendelssohn's have mostly
worn rather thin, though 'On Wings of Song' is still immensely popular.
Schumann's have fared rather better.
They have a more interesting accompaniment, with richer harmonies.
Songs such as 'Thou bloomest like a Flower', 'Dedication', 'The Two
Grenadiers', and the cycles 'Woman's Life and Love) and 'The Poet's Love' should
live for some time to come. A few Of Liszt's songs are still sung today.
The medium did not interest the other great composers of this period.
